Nuts can be a delicious way of delaying the aging process and may to keep away chronic illnesses like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancers. Two studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013, there is strong data that eating a variety of nuts may help you live longer. Eating just one ounce of mixed nuts daily was linked to a 20% decrease risk of death over a 30-year time period.

In 2003, the U.S. FDA issued a studied health claim that eating 1.5 ounces (42g) of nuts each day may reduce the risk of heart disease. Some recent research has also shown that eating nuts has been linked to lower the risk of certain types of cancer including colon cancer, gallbladder disease, diverticulitis, and can help reduce inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and belly fat.

Nuts are a source of healthy unsaturated fats, fiber, protein, antioxidants, and vitamins and minerals. Studies have shown that the best nuts to eat are walnuts,, almonds, cashews, hazelnuts and pistachios. These are considered tree nuts, and are listed with beans and legumes on the MyPlate food guidelines on the FDA’s website.
